New to Teaching Core Maths

This FREE programme is designed to support teachers who are in their first two years of teaching Core Maths and are teaching a Core Maths class during the academic year 2024/25. Its aim is to develop specialist knowledge and to increase confidence in teaching the course. It involves a direct working partnership between the Maths Hubs Network and the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme (AMSP).

Who can take part?

This programme is for Core Maths teachers from schools and colleges in their first two years of teaching a Core Maths class.

What is involved?

The principal focus is on Core Maths subject knowledge and pedagogy, and will be based on six key themes:

  • Using contextualised problem-solving
  • Applying Fermi estimation and modelling
  • Developing critical analysis
  • Making sense of finance
  • Using the pre-release materials
  • Exploring statistics

Technology and online teaching will also be underlying themes.

What will you learn?

  • You will plan lessons/sequences of lessons to promote student understanding, confidence and progres
  • You will understand the philosophy of Core Maths, with its approach to maths through contextualised problem-solvin

What is the cost?

The New to Teaching Core Maths Work Group is fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme and the AMSP so is provided free to participating state-funded schools/colleges.

We are currently planning dates/venues for our Work Groups.  In the meantime we encourage you to register your interest to participate in 2026/27 and we’ll be in touch as soon as registration opens.
